How IP Geolocation Works

When you visit a website, the server knows your IP address. By cross-referencing this IP address against massive databases (like MaxMind GeoLite2), websites can determine your approximate geographic location.

What Data is Included?

Typical IP geolocation lookups provide:

  • Country & Region: Highly accurate, generally correct over 99% of the time.
  • City: Often accurate, but can sometimes pinpoint an ISP's regional hub hub rather than your specific town.
  • Coordinates: Latitude and longitude coordinates reflect the city center, not your exact house or street address.
  • Timezone: Deduced automatically from the city or region data.

Can My Exact Address Be Found?

No. IP Geolocation databases do not store names, street addresses, or exact GPS coordinates of individual homes. The most precise an IP lookup usually gets is your city or postal code area. Only your Internet Service Provider (ISP) knows your exact physical address linked to that IP, and they protect that information under privacy laws.
